Personal Growth

The potential to be overwhelmed by life events and/or our own imperfect mental and physical makeup is ever present in all of us. Despite our vulnerabilities, though, not everyone gets depressed, even during truly hard times. Some people seem to cope better than others with life stresses, and they have taught us a great deal about the skills all people can learn to keep depression at bay.

The skills required to navigate oneself through the often stormy seas of life are not just absorbed magically from the atmosphere. For depressed people, or those at risk for depression, they are especially important skills to strive to learn and they are the very skills that Dr. Yapko teaches in his therapy sessions with clients. He has also made them available in various books and CDs, including those described on this website .

Dr. Yapko’s materials can be used as self-help aids to make it as easy as possible for all people to benefit from the explosion of great insights derived from research into the nature of depression and its effective treatments. Self-help is an essential part of overcoming depression, even when someone is already in therapy. Each person has to be responsible for learning and mastering the skills of managing themselves, whether it’s your food intake, getting adequate sleep and physical exercise, or managing your mood. Dr. Yapko’s materials can help you identify and learn those skills that can most make a positive change i n your mood and outlook – and your life.

Calm Down: A Self-Help Program for Managing Anxiety

Everyone gets anxious from time to time, of course. But, if you find yourself worrying too often, thinking too much about how things may go wrong, spinning around the same thoughts over and over, avoiding situations that cause you discomfort, or regularly feel you might not be able to cope with daily challenges without getting overwhelmed, then anxiety is likely to be a bigger part of your life than it needs to be.

Calm Down! will help you manage – and even prevent – episodes of anxiety in your life. In Calm Down!, Dr. Yapko brings his substantial clinical expertise to teaching you many of the key skills that are known to reduce and even prevent anxious thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Managing Pain With Hypnosis

This program provides two clinical hypnosis sessions designed to help reduce the suffering associated with painful conditions. In these two separate but related clinical sessions, the listener will be guided through the experience of hypnosis and taught the basic skills associated with hypnotic pain relief.

Hypnosis has repeatedly been shown to be one of the most reliable and least intrusive means for effectively managing physical pain, regardless of its cause. Hypnosis has been used as the principal or sole anesthetic in major surgical procedures, and pain clinics throughout the country routinely employ hypnosis and hypnotically derived methods in their interventions.

Sleeping Soundly

Difficulty falling or staying asleep, or having non-rejuvenating sleep, is termed "insomnia." While there can be many different medical and emotional factors that can cause or exacerbate insomnia, one of the most common is the "spinning around and around" of anxiety-producing thoughts, a stressful pattern called "rumination." It is vital to achieving good quality sleep to reduce rumination by managing your thoughts and feelings skillfully. The hypnosis session contained on this CD can help you reduce rumination, fall and stay asleep more easily, and thereby develop good, restorative sleep.

This CD's first track provides an overview of insomnia and its relationship to the way you think and problem-solve. The second track provides a formal hypnosis session for you to listen to, experience, and learn from while developing the ability to sleep well. The hypnosis session is soothing, supportive, and provides an easy path to follow into a good night's sleep.
